Andalusite is a rare silicate mineral that is trimorphic with Kyanite and Sillimanite. It is also one of the most well know pleochroic minerals; Tanzanite is probably the most well-known. Pleochroism is an optical phenomenon where the mineral appears in different colors from different angles. The absorption and speed of transmitted light in the crystal along the different axis causes the effect. When pleochroic minerals are gem-quality, they can be faceted into intriguing gemstones. This stone was faceted parallel to one axis, which creates flashes of an alternate color from the angles of the pavilion facets. In this case, the stone was faceted with a pretty light green color face up but has flashes of orange. This material came from the find in Bahia, Brazil, during the 1980s, which was one of the most significant discoveries of gem-quality Andalusite in history. The find was excellent, though relatively brief, and the material dried up rather quickly. Don't miss out on this superb collector's gemstone! Enjoy!
