Weight: 8.39 cts.
Size: 14.36 x 11.31 mm.
Color: Light Blue
Locality: Kelly Mine, Socorro Co., New Mexico
Here is a great rarity for US gems. This is a Smithsonite from the Kelly Mine in New Mexico. The blue color is quite special and renowned for this locality. The Kelly Mine was a great producer of Zinc in the early 20th century, but the mine closed operations in 1957. There is no more of this fantastic material on the market, and old specimens are becoming increasingly expensive. This stone was cut from a broken piece that we were lucky enough to be offered from an old collection. This stone has a soft light blue color that is lovely in hand. There are bands of colors that are intricate and beautiful. This stone is very gemmy for the material and nearly transparent! It is over 8 carats in weight which is a fantastic size for this material. This material is a great US treasure and undoubtedly limited. This stone was cut by Brett Kosnar of Kosnar Gem Co., during April 2020. Enjoy!
