Here is one of the most exciting finds to hit the market in years. This Grandidierite is from the new productions of gemmy material from Southern Madagascar. The mineral was first described in 1902, but there has been little of the mineral found until the past 2 years and gem quality material was unheard of until recently. It is a Silicate mineral with a hardness of 7.5 which is durable enough for jewelry! Rare gems that are durable enough for jewelry are few and far between. The material is a lovely blue/green color that is quite attractive. When backlit the stone glows a yellow color from certain angles. This is due to the fact the Grandidierite is strongly pleochroic. These stones are still quite rare and the production is quite limited from one source in the world. Enjoy!
