Here is a special gemstone! Hackmanite is a rare Sulfur rich form of Sodalite. The material from Afghanistan displays the rarest optical phenomenon called Tenebrescence. Tenebrescence is when the stone changes color through a photochemical reaction to UV radiation. With Hackmanite, the stones are colorless or near colorless and change to a deep purple in sunlight or under a UV light. The effect is reversible and if the stone is left in a dark place it will change back to near colorless. This process can happen indefinitely, but is destroyed by heating the stone. The first gem grade Hackmanite was discovered in Canada in 1991, so this is a relatively new gem mineral. Hackmanite also fluoresces a bright red/orange color, which will also cause a rapid Tenebrescent effect. These stones are quite rare and a spectacular gemological treasure! This stone is nearing 4 carats which is gigantic for the species! Enjoy!
