Moonstone is a potassium feldspar of the orthoclase species with white shimmer, similar to moonshine (therefore the name), called adularescence. Thin alternating layers of orthoclase and albite create the light interference in this material that is responsible for its “shiller”. This gem is a wonderful example of said material with fantastic flashes of white. The stone is chatoyant and displays a cet’s eye effect but is not sharp and turns into more of a rolling flash when the stone is moved. This Rose Cut Moonstones are very popular right now and are being set into designer rings. This stone was faceted by Brett Kosnar of Kosnar Gem Co, during December 2017. Enjoy!
