Gem grade Kurnakovite is extremely rare and there are only a hand full of these stones on the planet. It is a hydrated Borate mineral that only occurs from a few localities in the world. The mineral was named after Russian mineralogist and chemist Nikolai Semenovich Kurnakov. The original find was in Kazakhstan in 1940, and only a few other occurrences were found after, most notably in California. Most of the material is opaque and massive, but is rare cases there is gem rough. The mineral is difficult to facet and the rough is always quite small, so good cut stones are treasured. This is a special rare stone and difficult to replace! Enjoy!
