Here’s a cool piece of Fire Opal from Mexico. The deposit where this material comes from is very interesting. The opal was pushed into vacant fissures and pockets in the Rhyolite host rock by volcanic activity. There was a certain amount of fracturing that occurred when streams of hot liquid Opal mixed into the host rock. This produced intriguing mixes and patterns of Opal and the Rhyolite that create beautiful pieces when polished. The stone has an exciting history that dates back to the Aztecs, who used Fire Opals for their jewelry and art works. This cabochon has a unique appearance that would look excellent in jewelry. The Opal itself is bright orange and the color just glows. This piece is fun to play with in the hand, and looks like a sulfur pool frozen in time. Enjoy!
