Dioptase has one of the most distinctive and alluring colors of any crystallized mineral species. Dioptase is known as one of the premier species from localities like Tsumeb, and is a favorite among collectors worldwide. This is a Copper Silicate mineral, and that gorgeous color comes from the copper content. It forms in mines as a secondary ore mineral from the recrystallization of dissolved copper deposits. This faceted gem is actually from Republic of Congo, not Tsumeb. It has clean sections that do reflect light, which is exceptional since most of the material is opaque.
