Painite has an interesting history. The original discovery in the 1950’s yielded only 3 specimens of Painite, and for many years this was the rarest mineral in the world. Between it’s discovery and 2005 there was about 2 dozen more pieces found and most of those were obtained by the British Museum. An incredibly small amount of these specimens ever found their way to private collections. In 2005 there was a significant find of Painite, which yielded several thousand small broken specimens. Most of these were faceted, because there was only a hand full of good crystalized specimens. There were several pockets found over the next 2 years. All told, maybe less than 10,000 Painites now exists. Needless to say this is still a rare mineral and there has not been anymore of the material found. Most of the stones have all been sold now and there are few of these stones on the market at any time. This stone displays the finest color the Painite can produce, which is red. This stone is nicely gemmy and that stunning red color comes through beautifully. Enjoy!
