Sillimanite is related to Andalusite and Kyanite, and all 3 are considered difficult to facet. Sillimanite was considered the most difficult mineral to facet at one time because of the fibrous formation. Also known as Fibrolite because the mineral appears like a bunch of fibers twisted together. Some of this fibrous Sillimanite displays chatoyancy (the cat's eye effect), often in an attractive violet-brown shade. Throughout history, Sillimanite has been considered a rare gemstone that is known mainly to collectors. Deposits of Sillimanite have been found in Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, India, Tanzania and the USA.
One of the most impressive attributes about these Cat’s Eye Sillimanites is how sharp and bright the eye’s are. This stone displays distinctly in any light source, even low light conditions. This stone is well oriented and displays the phenomenon perfectly. This stone is nearly 20 carats, which is a large for this material. These stones are no longer being found, and are an exceptional 100% natural rare mineral! Enjoy!
