Andalusite is a rare silicate mineral that is trimorphic with Kyanite and Sillimanite. It is also one of the most well know pleochroic minerals, Tanzanite is probably the most well-known. Pleochroism is an optical phenomenon where the mineral appears different colors from different angles. This has to do with the absorption and speed of transmitted light in the crystal along different axis of a crystal formation. When pleochroic minerals are gem quality they can be faceted into intriguing gemstones. This stone was faceted parallel to one axis which creates flashes of an alternate color from the angles of the pavilion facets. In this case, the stone was faceted with a pretty light green color face up, but has flashes of orange. This material came from the find in Bahia, Brazil during the 1980’s, which was one of the greatest finds of gem quality Andalusite in history. The find was excellent, though quite brief, and the material dried up rather quickly. Don’t miss out on this excellent collector’s gemstone! Enjoy!
